Goin' Bananas...

Banana Bud - before the bloom.

Bananaaaaaaas!

Lots of rain here in the low country - over 15" above normal.  While this is bad for most crops, it has allowed the banana trees in our Charleston back yard to produce fruit!

Bananas start out in a bud, are "born" facing down, and turn up within a couple days.

Baby Bananas "Born" Facing Down

We are monitoring banana progress daily and expect to be making tons of banana foster, banana purees, and grilled bananas within the next month or two.  What would you make with them?

Bananas take months to ripen. Speed up the process by cutting off a full size but unripe green head / cluster and put it in a large trash bags.

Banana stalks only produce fruit once so it's important to cut them back after they give fruit. Cut the banana stalk close to the ground. It will regrow from the plants large rhizome roots.
