Choose Firm Bananas For Grilling If Available
Choose firm bananas for barbecuing on the grill. Ripe (soft) bananas are harder to grill because they will be too soft and stick to the grill. You also don't want an under ripe banana 'cause that's gross.
In the video, my bananas are riper than I'd like but that is what we had to work with. If you're bananas are too ripe then either grill them whole (like in the picture above with a slit in it), oil the grill as well as the banana, and/or buy a non-stick grill next time.
Bananas will need less time on the grill If you're bananas are riper, softer, or smaller than usual.
Make a banana boat or spruce up your grilled bananas with these additions:
- Ice Cream
- Chocolate Syrup or Chocolate Chips
- Marshmallows
- Caramel Sauce
- Ice Cream
- Crushed fruit like Pineapple
- Whipped Cream
- Cereal or Granola
- Nuts
Drizzle cooked bananas with a little dark rum or Amaretto on it if you got it. Serve with nuts, ice cream, chocolate syrup, or whipped cream.
Ever tried a peanut butter and grilled banana sandwich? That's right. Elvis would do backflips for that kinda sandwich. That's a level up for sure for your peanut butter banana sandwich game.
We are lucky to have real live banana trees in our backyard here in Charleston SC. Want to see how they grow? Check out my Blog post: Goin' Bananas. It's pretty cool - they start growing facing down and then turn up after a couple days.
FAQS About Grilled Bananas
Firm bananas are best but they still have to be ripe. Ripe bananas work on the grill but are harder to get the grill marks and may stick to the grill and turn mushy fast.
Don't cut the banana in half if it's too soft. Instead cut a slit down the middle (keeping it whole) and grill the outside skin and not the flesh. That way, it keeps the banana from sticking to the grill and becoming a hot mess.
Yup! Make a slit in the middle of the banana (keeping it whole) and fill it with your favorite ingredients like chocolate chips or marshmallows. Wrap it in aluminum foil and grill for 4-6 minutes.
