Use Any Fig for This Roasted Fig Recipe

Any type of fig will work with this roasted figs with balsamic and honey recipe. The most common grocery store figs are black mission and brown turkey.  Both are darker on the outside and a beautiful pink inside.

The figs in my video came from my back yard, and I don't know what variety they are.

Figs can be eaten raw. Take off the stem and eat the whole fig, skin and all.

Figs produce a milky sap at the stem when you pick them off the tree and it is ok to eat the sap.

Ripe figs are tender but not too soft and hold their shape when cut. Use overripe figs for fig jam.

Ingredients on a wood cutting board: oval dish of halved figs, small containers with: tabs of butter, ground cinnamon, salt, honey, and balsamic vinegar.

Variations on Figs with Honey Balsamic Glaze

Modify the balsamic honey glaze to fit your tastebuds. Try a dash of some of these ingredients:

  • ground cardamom
  • cayenne pepper for some heat
  • vanilla extract
  • a dash of dark rum or bourbon
  • ground cloves, allspice, or pumpkin pie spice
  • add a fresh herb like chopped herb like rosemary or mint
Stainless steel pan of brown sauce simmering on a stovetop gas range.

Tips For Roasted Figs with Balsamic and Honey

Leave the stem on when baking. It holds the fig together better and also makes a better presentation in my opinion. Having said that, take it off if you want to be done with it.

Let the balsamic honey glaze cool a couple minutes before drizzling over the figs. It will thicken as it cools an become gooey deliciousness.

Things In My Kitchen:

  • Hand mixer - Nothing fancy, electric, works like a charm, affordable, and makes a mean whipped cream.

Ingredients

Ingredient List:

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • ¾ lb fresh figs, halved
  • 1 ½ tablespoon unsalted butter
  • >  ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • > ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 cup ice cream or whipped cream , served on the side

Instructions

For the Figs:

  • Preheat oven to 400F
  • Lay figs in a single layer (cut side up) in a lightly oiled baking dish and cook uncovered for ~12 minutes or until warm and soft.

For the Sauce:

  • In a small pan melt butter and add cinnamon.  Stir cinnamon into butter first and then add salt, honey, and balsamic vinegar.
  • Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and cook at a low simmer for ~ 8-10 minutes stirring occasionally or until thickened.  Don't skimp on this step - you want it to reduce.  It will thicken as it cools for a couple minutes.
  • Pour the thickened balsamic honey sauce over the figs and serve with fresh whipped cream or ice cream.  Happy eating!  Beckie

Notes

  • Balsamic and Honey Glaze will thicken as it cools, so let it cool a couple minutes before drizzling over the figs.
