Grilled Okra Variations

Add your favorite herbs or spices to this grilled okra recipe or leave it classic & grill with olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Try tossing okra with these seasonings before grilling:

  • cumin, chili powder, and lime juice
  • coriander and turmeric
  • dried Italian or all purpose seasoning
  • five spice powder and a dash of worcestershire sauce

Don't have a grill?  Roast okra uncovered in your oven at 425F on a sheet pan around 15-20 minutes to get them crispy.

How to Pick Okra For Grilled Okra

Pick small okra (~ 3") that are plump (aren't shriveled), smooth, bright green (although there are varieties of okra that range from purple to red), firm yet tender, and don't have a lot of blemishes.

Older okra or okra with dryer stem ends can be fibrous and stringy. Choose younger smaller okra for pickling to avoid toughness.

Older okra would be good sliced for stews and recipes that cook for a longer time (like gumbo).

How To Store Fresh Okra

Okra is uber perishable. It doesn't keep long - maybe 2-3 days.

Store whole okra in a refrigerator with some loose paper towels around it in a perforated bag or an open shallow container.

Try to use fresh okra immediately, it gets slimy fast.

Do I eat the okra stems?

You can. It depends on the tenderness. Try it out and see if you like it. I'll sometimes eat the smaller okra stems if they're tender.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lb whole okra
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • pinch black pepper

Instructions

  • Heat a grill to medium high to high heat (~425F)
  • Toss all ingredients together in a bowl.  Skewer the okra.  
  • Put on grill, cover, cook ~ 2-3 minutes per side or until grill marks appear. Happy Okra Eating!  Beckie

Notes

Don't have a grill?  Roast uncovered (no skewers) on an aluminum lined baking sheet ~ 12-15 minutes, turning once.
