This easy homemade tarter sauce recipe has four main ingredients that can be built upon or eaten as is! Combine equal parts mayonnaise and diced pickles with a little vinegar and salt. Fast and simple tarter sauce is done!

How To Make A Simple Tarter Sauce At Home

Making tarter sauce at home with some basic pantry staples. A simple tarter sauce combines mayonnaise with pickles, vinegar like apple cider or white wine vinegar (or lemon juice), and salt to taste.

I like equal parts mayonnaise and pickles and sometimes even more pickles than mayonnaise.

Ya Basic Tarter Sauce Variations

This simple homemade tarter sauce recipe can be made into different variations. Try adding:

  • diced capers
  • a dash of old bay seasoning
  • a dash of cayenne pepper
  • fresh or dried dill or other herbs like chives, thyme, parsley, or rosemary
  • a dash of dijon mustard
  • a dash of Worcestershire Sauce
  • a wee bit of onions
  • fresh lemon juice instead of vinegar.
  • lemon zest
  • cornichons instead of pickles

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • ¾ cup chopped pickle
  • 2 teaspoon white wine vinegar
  • a dash of salt

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix.  Add salt to taste.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to combine.
