This whipped cream is beaten "harder" or is more firm than the "softer" version below. Watch the video and choose your texture preference.

You will never go back to the grocery store to buy whipped cream or cool whip once you've made your own whipped cream from heavy whipping cream.

Whipped Cream Ingredients

There is one ingredient in whipped cream and it is heavy cream.

This simple and easy homemade fresh whipped cream recipe is unsweetened. Whipped cream is delicious plain because it is generally served with something sweet like cake or pie.

Having said that, whipped cream can also be spiced or sweetened up with other ingredients like:

  • powdered sugar
  • bourbon
  • rum
  • vanilla extract
  • cinnamon
  • cardamom
  • ground ginger, etc...

Add any additional ingredients slowly while in the final stages of whipping the cream. Or gently fold in the ingredients after the whipped cream has formed peaks.

Tips On Making Homemade Whipped Cream

Whipping heavy cream is easiest when everything is cold. So keep heavy whipping cream in the refrigerator until you are ready to whip it.

Also, keep a stainless steel bowl in your freezer if you have room. Having ingredients and the bowl cold will help the cream whip faster and the cream will be fluffier.

It's all science, but basically cream has a lot of fat and when it's cold the fat stays together better when whipping in the air. When the cream is warm, the fat gets warm and there is less fluff, so to speak.

Homemade Whipped Cream Is Best Served Fresh

Homemade whipped cream can be made ahead of time, but it is easy to make and tastiest when served fresh.

Having said that, scratch made whipped cream will store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for a couple days, but give it a couple swift hand mixes to refresh it before serving.

Whipped cream can also be frozen in an airtight container for a couple months.

Where Is Heavy Cream In The Grocery Store?

Heavy cream is located in the dairy section of the grocery store, generally next to the milk and half and half creamer.

Whipping Cream Is Butter (Well Kinda!)

Interesting fact: If heavy cream is "over whipped" it will turn into homemade butter.

The buttermilk will separate and you will be left with fresh butter. You will literally be churning butter!

This delicious fresh homemade whipped cream recipe is easy to make with one ingredient: heavy whipping cream.

  • Author: beckie
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: Makes ~ 1 ½ cups or 4 servings
  • Category: Dessert
  • Method: No Cooking Involved
  • Cuisine: International
  • Diet: Gluten Free

Ingredients

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  • Optional: Put medium metal mixing bowl in freezer  for 15 minutes before whipping.  This is not necessary but cold cream whisks and thickens easier and faster.
  • Whip heavy cream in bowl with an electric hand mixer until stiff peaks form (~2-3 minutes).
  • Don't over beat the cream or it will become lumpy and potentially turn into butter with a side of buttermilk.  Happy Whippin'!  Beckie

Notes

  • Whipped cream can be made in any bowl, but a chilled bowl works best.  Having said that, chilling is not necessary, it just makes it easier and faster to whisk when the cream stays cold.
  • Having said that, whipped cream can also be spiced or sweetened up with other ingredients like: powdered sugar, bourbon, rum, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ground ginger, etc...  Whip the cream first and then fold in the other ingredients.
  • Add any additional ingredients slowly while in the final stages of whipping the cream. Or gently fold in the ingredients after the whipped cream has formed peaks.
