5 Ingredient Oven Baked Asian Sticky Sauce for Ribs

This 5 ingredient sticky rib sauce is an easy game changer for flavorful sweet ribs. Mix together these simple five ingredients for an easy sauce for Asian style pork ribs.

  • hoisin sauce
  • bbq sauce - Choose your favorite or go the extra mile and pick up an Asian style one.
  • ketchup
  • 5 spice powder (generally ground star anise, fennel, cloves, cinnamon, and pepper)
  • gochagura (a Korean red pepper flakes) - Substitute red chili flakes, crushed red pepper or chili powder.

Ingredient Variations and Substitutions For Sticky Ribs

This sticky ribs recipe works for both St. Louis Style Ribs or Baby Back Ribs. The recipe instructional video is with Baby Back Ribs.

Here are some ingredient substitutions:

  • Leave out five spice or use garam masala instead. Or just add a sprinkle of what you've got that's generally in 5 spice powder mix: cinnamon, cloves, fennel, pepper, or star anise.
  • BBQ Sauce - I wrote this recipe using regular bbq sauce because that's what's readily available. Up your game on this recipe and use Asian barbecue sauce - it has soy sauce, ginger, and rice wine vinegar among other ingredients.
  • Ketchup - In a pinch, use ¼ cup tomato paste with a splash of vinegar and 1 tablespoon sugar.
  • Hoisin Sauce - Mix 2 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 ½ tablespoon molasses or brown sugar, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, ½ teaspoon corn starch OR use oyster sauce, or just extra bbq sauce with with soy sauce added to it.

Pro - Tips For Asian Baked Sticky Pork Ribs

  • Line your baking sheet with another sheet of aluminum foil in case the ribs leak from the package so no juices burn on your sheet pan. This makes clean up easy.
  • Take out a little of the sauce mixture before basting the raw ribs if you're into dipping.

  • Silicone Basting Brush - for slathering on sauce
