Prosciutto Wrapped Melon

Jump to Recipe

This prosciutto wrapped melon appetizer is one of the easiest and lightest recipes for a hot summer day.

Prosciutto can be wrapped with any kind of melon. Cantaloupe and honeydew are two different types of melon that go well with prosciutto.

Don't turn the stove on this summer and bring down the heat in your kitchen, home, and body with this cool and refreshing prosciutto wrapped melon appetizer or snack.

This classic and easy recipe has Italian origins. Prosciutto and melon is called Prosciutto e Melone in Italy.

What is Prosciutto?

Prosciutto is a salt cured and very thinly sliced Italian ham that is not cooked. This Italian ham is often referred to as "crudo".

Crudo translates from Italian to English as "raw". Likewise, prosciutto's translation from Italian to English is "ham".

Prosciutto crudo is made from curing high quality pork leg by covering it in salt to draw out the moisture which also doesn't allow any bacteria in. It is then washed, seasoned, left to rest for months to years, and then sliced super thin.

There are generally two types of prosciutto: prosiutto crudo and prosciutto cotto. The kind that is normally in the grocery store is prosciutto crudu. Prosciutto cotto is cooked Italian ham and is not as readily available in the grocery store.

This prosciutto and melon recipe uses prosciutto crudo and melon and either cantaloupe or honeydew work.

How to wrap Prosciutto and Melon

Prosciutto is delicate and can be tricky to work with.

Sometimes it's hard to wrap around the melon, and you kinda just gotta stick it on the top of the cantaloupe or honeydew.

Luckily, thinly sliced prosciutto is sticky to begin with :). Having trouble wrapping it around the melon? I get it - just pile it on the top of it and start eating.

What goes well with Prosciutto and Melon?

Want a cheese to serve with this easy cantaloupe and melon recipe? The saltiness of a hard Parmesan cheese pairs well with the silkiness of Prosciutto and the sweetness of the melon.

This prosciutto wrapped melon recipe is delicious with honeydew melons or cantaloupe melons.

Figs and pears are also classic prosciutto pairings.

How Far in Advance Can Melon Be Wrapped with Prosciutto?

Prosciutto can oxidize fast (turns brown). While it's safe to eat if the melon is wrapped the same day it may not be visually pretty.

Cut the cantaloupe or melon earlier in the day but wrap it with the prosciutto right before serving.

We just traveled to Italy and had this as an appetizer many nights. We did it for a dinner party just the other night back home in Boulder. Great website!
